The QEP (Quality Enhancement Plan) is NOVA's strategy to enhance student learning. It is part of NOVA's 2012 reaffirmation of accreditation by the Commission on Colleges (COC) of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

What is NOVA's QEP?

Faculty, staff, and students have been working on preliminary QEP topic proposals. Here is what we are considering:

Service Learning: integrating service projects and classroom learning.

Learner-Centered (21st century) Classrooms: Rethinking how we teach and changing the physical space in which we teach.

Getting Back on Track: How can NOVA help students who are on academic warning or probation?

Increasing College Readiness: Taking college-level classes, preparing for the future, understanding expectations, placement exam issues and more!

Citizenship Across the Curriculum: "we must assure that those who study in our classrooms acquire a basic understanding of the world in which they live and the important place they occupy within it."

Faculty-Student Collaboration: Increasing the opportunities for students and faculty to work together outside of the classroom.

Curriculum-Centered Education: Establishing a repository for course information and being accountable for what we teach.

  1. For those who plan to attend nova should be sent in the mail a study guide making them ready for the placement tests. This study guide should be sent out as soon as the student signs up to attend nova. There should be nothing to sign up for or anything like that. This will either discourage students to do it or they will not know it is an option to get the study guide.

  2. I agree with E.S. I think that a study guide would be helpful for preparing for placement tests. I think that integrating service projects in classroom learning would help students get more involved and interessted in their classwork

  3. I think that NOVA could do a lot to help students on academic warning or probation. It is very difficult for a student, the way NOVA works now, to sign up for classes for the following semester. I agree that students on probation should have to go through their counselor to determine how many credits they should take the following semester, but it is extremely difficult for students to sign up for classes when there are holds on their accounts due to their probation. Making a student have to come in to campus several times just so someone else can place them in a class versus being able to sign up for classes online like everyone else does can make a student stray away from continuing their educational process and actually enrolling in courses.

  4. I definetly think that NOVA should send out study guides for the placement tests. That would help a lot. And I think that service projects for the classroom would be a great way to learn in a fun way while giving back to the community. I also think that NOVA should offer a class that helps to prepare you for the placement tests.I think that students and teachers working together outside the classroom is a great idea. It would increase trust and communication.

  5. I strongly agree that service needs to be incorporated into our learning curriculum at NOVA. There are too many students who do not understand the importance of service and morals in society.
I would also like to see a better 21 century classroom: The Manassas campus has no upgraded classes and the learning environment is not too conducive; the chairs are too old fashioned and the class set-up does not create an interactive communication environment.

  6. The study guides for the placement test is the best idea i have ever heard, that would be a life savior. NOVA also needs to become more active, i feel as if they are passive, to a degree. Not all of the people in the counsler section arebut some definitly are. This problem makes going to Nova a hassle and it makes a person second guess enrollment. Also, never can a problem be solved easily, it takes many trips to nova and many headaches. So something shoud be done.

  7. I strongly agree that Nova needs to send out a study guide to those students who plan on taking the placemnt test, so they know what to prepare for.

  8. I think that students should not have to be forced to do community service for a grade and that they should do it because they are willing. But if they do have to do it to enhance whatever is taught in class then i think it's appropriate in some cases.

  9. I believe that students need a more hands on approach to learning. By that I mean more group orriented activities or projects and more time to get to know the professor and what their expectations are and how they are as a person. We really never get a good feel for the professor because its such a rush to get everything done that no one really takes the time to get to know the students.

No changes or very changes are needed at NVCC.

  11. I strongly agree as well, i think if students need help especially academically or in life skill such as time management and study habits, nova should provide some type of class enviremont in which students can learn such skills. I think that we all are here because we are taking closer steps to the real world and it will be better if NOVA helps the students here now, so they can excel in the future. So they can expect what to do after they leave and have a better understanding of the world and ourselves.
