The QEP (Quality Enhancement Plan) is NOVA's strategy to enhance student learning. It is part of NOVA's 2012 reaffirmation of accreditation by the Commission on Colleges (COC) of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

First Year Experience

Here is a new proposal, submitted by NOVA's Achieving the Dream team. It addresses the many needs of incoming students. Click on the link below.

  1. I am puzzled about how this QEP differentiates what it proposes from the current Achieving the Dream plan. Will the College continue with ATD if this QEP is not accepted? I am wondering if the College sees QEP as a way to further a program that has begun or a way to start a new initiative?

  2. I think that this QEP is a great idea. A lot of kids that are just comming out of highschool do not know much about where they want to go or what they want to do. I feel this will help them in many ways.

  3. If the achieving the dream is set up exactly like this, then clearly there is no need for it. However, if the QEP is different in that it makes it easier for people to find new information out or to better understand new things about the college or the particular campus they attend then I think it is a boon to the college.

  4. College is a big first step, making a mistake could ruin your whole college career. It is a priority that students know what they need to do during their college career. If its helpful then students should do it, its a great idea.

  5. I participated in FYE at a previous college. I really enjoyed the classroom experience. Not only did it help me determine a career path, but the functions it sponsored helped me meet other students since I was in a new school in a new city.

  6. The FYE proposal has many good ideas for young folks new to college but this is only a portion of the NOVA population.

How do you make the program mandatory for the folks that need it and not mandatory for the folks that don't? I've heard students say the SDV requirement was a waste of time for them. I don't want to make more unnecessary requirements for those students outside the subset which SDV or FYE benefits.

  7. Lots of great comments! Thanks! There is some confusion about the QEP in relation to Achieving the Dream (AtD). They are two completely separate programs, but they do have some common goals. The QEP could be one of the AtD initiatives, as long as it makes a significant impact on learning and has a broad audience. I think the FYE does just that. With tight budgets, it may be fiscally responsible to select FYE as the QEP. However, if it is a "train that has already left the station," another topic (that wouldn't necessarily get attention) may be a better choice.
